Juste en sortant de Lamastre par la route du Cheylard on aperçoit une petite fontaine nous décidons de nous arrêter pour voir de plus prêt,
En face de nous découvrons une vasque de forme particulière mais nous y reviendrons surmonté par un pierre de forme vaguement anthropomorphe d’où sort un tuyau,
L’ensemble doit être extrêmement ancien au vu de l’usure de la pierre, elle fut construite au bord de la route à l’époque ou celle-ci n’était encore qu’un chemin muletier,
Donc cette figure surmonte une vasque de forme circulaire jusque là rien de bien exceptionnel me direz vous mais la particulariste de réside pas là,
Mais dans l’évacuation du trop plein en effet une entaille sur un bord à l’arrière de la vasque permet à l’eau de s’écouler dans une rigole qui suit un chemin hélicoïdal le long de la vasque jusqu’au cote opposé à l’évacuation,
Nous avons là une forme bien particulière de fontaine en effet c’est la première fois que nous voyons cette forme et surtout cette qualité hélas le temps nous manquait ce jour là il faudra que lorsque nous retournons sur place, que nous dégagions mieux la fontaine de débris végétaux qui l’encombrent afin d’avoir une vision plus exacte sur parcours de l’eau et du pourquoi de cette forme,
La forme anthropomorphe est celle d’un chien.
Jadis, un Compagnon du Devoir Tailleur de pierre, voulant concrétiser un symbole de protection de la Cité, érigea sur les fontaines situées dans le pourtour de Lamastre des statues représentant un chien.
De ces représentations zoomorphes placées le long des voies qui convergent sur le bourg, une subsiste déjà marquée par les outrages du temps, 2 kilomètres avant Le Crestet ; l’autre,rénovée, est à mi-chemin entre Lamastre et Saint-Barthélemy-Grozon.
En tout on comptait 4 de ces fontaines.
