Chantier de reconstruction de l’Hermione

Reconstruction site of the Hermione

The ambition of the Association Hermione-La Fayette was to reconstruct as closely as possible the original frigate, taking into account current regulatory requirements, including airworthiness, vessel over 65 meters long wearing three masts and 1500 m2 of sail, whose shell is entirely made of oak.
Some figures: a mast 54 meters above the keel, 2000 in French oak selected forests, a puzzle of more than 400 000 pieces of wood and metal, pulleys 1000, a ton of tow for caulking guns firing 26 bullets of 12 books on the battery deck and 8 guns firing cannonballs 6 pounds on the forecastle deck.
The site was installed in one of the two dry docks located at the end of the Royal rope, along the Charente in Rochefort. The place had been designed and built for the visit.
From the beginning of the project, it was not just to rebuild the heart of the old arsenal of Colbert, a ship of the eighteenth century, but above all to share with the public this adventure, that he may discover the main stages of reconstruction. The project proved to be a real popular success with nearly 250,000 visitors a year, the symbolic threshold of the three and a half million visitors was crossed. This popular success has been with the support of local authorities, the town of Rochefort, the Charente-Maritime and the Poitou-Charentes region, the main driver of the financing of Hermione.
The site has been delayed the launch initially planned for 2008 was postponed to July 6, 2012. In the eighteenth century, the original vessel was built in less than a year. In June 2008, however, after the small boat and the large boat, the boat, the largest of the three annexes to the board Hermione was put in the water, if the frigate itself.
Several changes were made to the original plan of the ship, for the sake of stability and security: in particular, the plates are bolted and not pegged to prevent the secondary game to the construction period. Similarly, the masts are glued and not assembled with metal rings to prevent water infiltration. The guns are lightweight and non-functional: if they had been, Hermione was a warship and could not belong to the Navy. Running rigging remain hemp; in March 2011, the wing remains scheduled for flax. An engine is planned for security as well as generators for lighting and minimal comfort.
As expected, the launch took place with great pomp July 6, 2012, hailed by 21 strokes official canon.
The demise of the frigate (without rigging) conducted an initial « navigation test » towed on the Charente before joining a new dock, (the shape Napoleon III) tailored to address the site.
