Le moulinage en Ardeche

Throwing in the Ardeche

The throwing is the second stage of labor silk.
This is developed in the Ardèche from the seventeenth and especially the eighteenth century.
Between between the silk-producing regions (Languedoc, Vaucluse) and the Lyon silk department of Ardèche is perfectly situated for this activity.
Duranr two centuries sericulture then throwing were developed to allow people to keep Ardèche, in the nineteenth century, the role of first level.
In 1909, 590 grindings employ 13,000 workers, or 45% of the national total on this industry.

The building:
It consists of an elongated building in the valley, and lit by narrow windows regular.
There is a channel carrying water from the river is used to provide the driving force.
The miller, the foreman and the offices are on the ground floor of the building generally the road side.
The workers have their rooms or their dormitories upstairs.
The work is done in the basement or is the factory with its mills and banks.
The basement is a large room half buried to maintain a temperature of 25 ° C and a humidity of 85% required to work silk thread.

The work of throwing:
Spinning is to unwind the cocoon and son together several together to obtain a sufficient caliber to consolidate the thread and get more yarn qualities (organzine crepe, sailing …).
This is done in several steps.
Step 1: Soak the silk in a slightly oily liquid to soften.
Step 2: The unwinding of wrapping the wire a fleet placed on a tavelle (so light wooden wheel) on a horizontal coil called Pug.
Step 3: The dubbing of assembling the son of two different pugs on the same coil.
Step 4: The throwing which prints one or more son to a number of twists per meter to consolidate the wire and allow the subsequent production of various types of tissues.

Evolution of throwing from the seventeenth to the early twentieth century :
On the area of medium and high Eyrieux well as township and Vernoux Lamastre there were two grindings in 1720 to one and the other Ollieres Lamastre
In 1785 we identify 11 with 1 in Saint -Christol , one in St. Pierreville Gluiras 3 , 5 in St. Albon d’Ardèche ( Albon and Marcols ) 1 in Saint -Etienne- de-Serre .
The work of the silk leaves the craft area to move to the industrial stage in the nineteenth century with a peak of prosperity from 1820 to 1855.
Pebrine , silkworm disease destroy the prosperity in 1853 decimating livestock , so do not remove the grindings arde NIOHC begin work imported from China and Bengal silks.
In 1868 63 grindings we identify are active in Boutières Dornas including 6 , 6 to Ollières 7 in St. Pierreville Gluiras 4 , 4 in Saint -Sauveur-de -Montagut and 16 – Albon Marcols .
The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 promote imports .
In 1920 75 4 grindings which we identify in Cheylard 6 Dornas , Vernoux 4 , 5 in St. Pierreville Gluiras 6 , 11 Marcols -Albon , 6 in Saint -Sauveur-de -Montagut .
Labor employed in the industry was essentially feminine latter being especially abundant and undemanding .

Evolution of throwing the seventeenth to the early twentieth century :
The 1920s saw the emergence of rayon and nylon in the 1950s that come highly competitive natural evening , the final blow will be worn by the nylon.
Nowadays workshops throwing n ( use the strength of rivers , and the workforce is incommensurate with what she was .
However a culture and to industrial knowledge in natural silk is a small business twenty still working in the field of throwing in Ardeche but synthetic son .

– The throwing Jouanard installed on Talaron to Beauvène is one of five grindings of Rhône -Alpes to work only natural silk . The company dates back to 1835 and then combined spinning occupying a hundred workers and stopped throwing since 1930 and with thirty people. The mills were driven by a wheel fishing and today they are driven by two turbines. In 1960 still occupied throwing twenty workers. Today Mr. and Mrs. Jouanard working family with their daughter . They double and twist from 1000 to 1500 pounds of silk per month. The raw material comes from China and Brazil. The strength of the company is its ability to work on organsins ( silk thread formed of two twisted greige son each in the same direction and then twisted together in the opposite direction ) . This wire allows working as delicate crepe georgette or fancy son . The main market is the high fashion and brands. The irregularity of orders imposed timetables and schedules on demand.

– The company’s throwing Riou occupies two factories : one that already existed in the last century Extramianoux ( difficult access ) and which was enlarged and a building dating from 1985 Bridge Chervil . The company has been owned for generations by the same family . At the peak , she was 13 employees who produce 7-8 tons of silk per month. Now there are no more than three ( family ) that produce one ton of silk per month and 2-3 tons of synthetic (the visit is excluded because security is not guaranteed ) .

– The company is a family Peyraverney originating company Saint -Julien – Molin wheel which installed a throwing in Saint -Sauveur in 1951. In 1979 , she took a throwing Albon : the mill Cros is very old but has the equipment to work the natural silk. At the time, there are opportunities for this market.
1995-96 : resume throwing Paul Fournant to Ollières (formerly Ducros institutions , which had 180 workers ten years earlier) .
The Albon plant is transferred to Ollières in June 1999. It has 13 people on 1 January 1999 , the end of June there are 22 and the activity could take 35 employees within a year. 70 % of production is exported to European countries in particular .

– The company Bruno Durand is a local company that has chosen to settle in Moulinon , near Saint -Sauveur-de -Montagut to benefit from trained staff. The Ducros institutions Moulinon were taken in 1983 by Mr. Fournant . Then Bruno Durant, who has two other factories Annonay and Saint -Priest took over the business in 1993. He is currently the party Scharzenbach group. It manufactures textiles for high -end clothing , including lycra. 60 % of production went abroad (Italy , Germany).
During the establishments employed 189 people at the end of 1988 their three sites. There remain more than 150 end of June 1999 with 27 Moulinon .
