Le premier musée d’archéologie de Bavay a été fondé par Maurice Hénault en 1906.
Le musée actuel a été ouvert en 1976 dans un bâtiment conçu par les architectes Waldschmidt et Jourdain, à proximité immédiate du forum. Décidée en 1967, sa construction aura coûté 4 millions de francs (55 % par le Département, 40 % par l’État et 5 % par la ville). Sa gestion est alors assurée par la ville de Bavay. Jean-Claude Carmelez en est le conservateur de 1976 à 1993.
Il a ensuite été départementalisé en 2000 et le département du Nord a entrepris de renouveler sa muséographie. Le Département devient propriétaire du site lui-même en 2009. Le musée a été rebaptisé Forum antique de Bavay le 15 septembre 2011.
Maurice Hénault en 1906 découvre au début du XXe siècle un forum et des thermes alimentés par un aqueduc amenant les eaux d’une fontaine située à une vingtaine de kilomètres. Henri Biévelet, de 1942 à 1976, a dégagé à l’ouest la plus grande partie des cryptoportiques ainsi que l’esplanade et à l’est la basilique civile. Jean-Claude Carmelez, accompagné de collègues enseignants et de lycéens, prend la relève et poursuit l’exploration scientifique du site jusqu’en 1997.

The current museum was opened in 1976 in a building designed by the architects Waldschmidt and the Jordan, nearby immediate of the forum. It was then départementalisé in 2000 and the department of the North began to renew its museography. The Department becomes an owner of the very site in 2009. The museum was renamed antique Forum of Bavay on September 15th, 2011.
Maurice Hénault in 1906 discovers at the beginning of the XXth century a forum and thermal baths fed by an aqueduct bringing waters of a fountain situated in about twenty kilometers. Henri Biévelet, from 1942 till 1976, cleared on the West the largest part of cryptoportiques as well as the esplanade and in the East the civil basilica. Jean-Claude Carmelez, accompanied with teaching colleagues and with high school students, takes over and pursues the scientific exploration of the site until 1997.
